A Sad Story About Rwanda

Mom's note: This post contains mature information that may not be suitable for all kids. Although the post is in Finn's words, please review before reading to kids...

Muraho!

This is my second blog post of the year and it is going to be very emotional. It is about a genocide, have you heard that word before? Genocide can happen during a war and it is when one group of people tries to kill a different group of people.

There was a huge genocide in Rwanda, but the rest of the world didn't really care a lot about it. So back to the point, there were two sides, one was named the Hutus
and the other, the Tutsis. The Hutus were killing the Tutsis, but they have a long (and complicated) history of not liking each other.
This is the scary part...

It's like having your neighbor come to your house and slaying you with a machete because you look different from them.

Isn't that mean and scary.

There is a movie called Hotel Rwanda that my mom and I watched that is a true story about a Hutu man named Paul, who was the manager of the nice hotel. He was married to a Tutsi but they still loved each other. Paul saved more than 1000 Hutus and Tutsis by letting them hide in the hotel. And one day they ran out of water and so they had to drink out of the pool and eventually, the pool water was completely gone. He's one of the bravest men in Africa.

Do you want to know something cool? My mom and I are staying in the same hotel, it is called Hotel Des Milles Collines aka Hotel Rwanda. At least the pool is clean and filled up.

One of the Tutsis who helped stop the genocide is now the President of Rwanda.  His name is also Paul.  Rwanda has peace now and is one of the safest places in all of Africa.

For more information watch Hotel Rwanda

This is the real Paul from Hotel Rwanda.  He is alive now and lives in Belgium.

P.S. If you watch the movie make sure to watch it with a parent.
