ABOUT

This blog describes my adventures in Africa. In 2018, this will be my 4th trip to Africa. I traveled to Rwanda in March 2016, and Kenya and Tanzania in the Spring, 2015, and Kenya in 2010. On our journey, we'll be visiting schools, centers for people with disabilities, making friends, looking for animals and finding adventure wherever we go. Wahoo!!!!

An African Experience

Hi,
Today we went to a green house and a boarding school.

We went to a green house and learned how they grow plants in Rwanda. This is what they do.

1. They buy seeds.
2. They plant the seeds.
3. They water.
4. They harvest.
5. They eat and sell.

Usually the kids are the ones who get the water.
The kids spend a lot of time pumping water and carrying it far distances like A Long Walk To Water. Rwanda is called the land of a thousand hills, so they have to walk far, up and down many long miles, carrying heavy yellow water jugs. Pumping was very easy except it might get tiring if I had to do it all day long, AND carry it back for miles.

BOARDING SCHOOL

We also visited a boarding school for girls. The youngest girls were 11 and in 6th grade (here it is called "O Level" 1 Secondary School).

Non-Sequitur

My mom keeps telling me that when you're in Rwanda you should never expect the correct food you order. For example last night I ordered a simple cheese pizza. Turns out they thought I said " Add all the vegetables you have," For example Onions, tomatoes, olives, spinach, peppers, eggplant, and kale. Isn't that crazy. Let's just say I went to bed hungry!

"Murabeho"

Mom's note:  Everywhere we go, Finn attracts a lot of attention. This picture illustrates a fairly typical situation that happens to him every day, sometimes multiple times a day.   People whispering, smiling, laughing, talking with him, touching him.  The moment this woman saw him, she came running over and started hugging him, tugging at him and asking him questions in Kinyarwanda. She seemed overjoyed to meet him, and sweet Finn went along for the ride...

  1. These are wonderful pictures! We envy the lady who's hugging you, and understand why she's so happy to do it!
